African print and Burberry Prorsum Spring/Summer 2012 Womenswear

When I woke up this morning I had several mentions on twitter all in reference to Burberry’s use of African print in their S/S 12 womenswear. Some people are angry about what they perceive as an appropriation of culture. Others are upset that African designers have been using African print for ages with no recognition by mainstream media (read Vogue and the like), and a couple think the PR that Burberry got for using African print can only be a good thing. I’m with the latter camp.

My sister and I launched MAKSI almost 2 years ago in Ghana, and to the best of my knowledge we were part of a pioneering group of young people who started to create global contemporary fashion with African print (I am not counting the established Ghanaian designers like Kofi Ansah, Joyce Ababio, Ekua Busia etc). In the time since we launched, a number of fashion labels have sprung up in Ghana offering ready to wear clothing made in African print – this in my opinion can only be a good thing. It is my hope that if there are more African designers making African inspired clothing, or more shops selling African contemporary clothing then more people would recognise the beauty in our fashion, and include African clothing as part of their everyday wardrobe not just as ‘Friday wear’ (as is the case in Ghana), or something you wear when you are going to an ‘African’ or ‘black event’ (for those in the Diaspora).

So how do I really feel about Burberry using African print in their latest collection? I think its great. Burberry is a global brand, and their use of African print puts African print on the global stage. Yes, it is annoying that the global mass media didn’t get so excited when African designers have been doing the same thing for eons but that’s the way the cookie crumbles. What I think will happen is that all the people who cannot afford to buy Burberry’s African inspired fashion will start looking for alternate ways to find that look – and when they do, they should find MAKSI and all the other African labels who have been rocking African contemporary fashion.
